Here are 7 mistakes that you may be making online that could repel your ideal clients or your potential joint venture partners.
As you read through these mistakes, think about how you feel when this happens to you.
- Does it make you feel respected?
- Does it make you want to explore working with the person?
- Does it feel pushy?
1. No links to your website from your social media profiles
This one may not actually repel clients; however, it makes it difficult for them to get to know you. On Facebook, a lot of people list their employment as “self-employed” which links nowhere. Get a Facebook business page or group and link to it. Put your website information and business phone number on your “About Me” page.
2. Offering your free gift as soon as they friend you
You have probably seen lots of people do this. Heck, even some big names promote doing this. They are not the people I follow. People friend you to get to know you.
When you turn around and say:
- “Grab my free gift”
- “Schedule a consultation”
- “Buy my product”
- “Join my group”
- … etc.
It’s like walking up to someone at a party and saying, “Hi, my name is Cindy J, and I think we should get married.”
You are not allowing time to nurture the relationship.
It is important for you to trust that your ideal clients will see your posts and your offers without you shoving it down their throat the second they friend you.
3. Tagging someone to promote your offer
You may have good intentions, but this is spammy. Keep in mind that when you tag someone it automatically goes to their page. This means that you are also sharing this information with all of their friends.
It’s fine to tag – if and only if you have their permission.
Let’s say you tag me about your latest program. My friends will see it, and more than likely will think that you are being pushy and not give you credit. (I typically unfriend people that do this to me.) However, if you tag me with my permission, I will then say what a wonderful product it is and how great you are and my friends will take notice.
The best strategy is to ask me to promote you to my page, therefore the post is mine and my friends pay even more attention to it. They think, Wow, Cindy J likes this person, maybe I should check her out. This then gets you known by word of mouth. If my tribe trusts me, they will trust you by default.
4. Putting a positive quote or no picture up as your profile picture
This makes people wonder who you really are and what you are hiding. This is also true when you don’t have your picture on your website. I have a client who refused to put her picture on her website for years because she did not want her friends to know about her business.
5. Offering a free coaching session on your home page
People are smart and they know nothing is really free. The first thing most people think when seeing this is “what are they trying to sell.” They are also asking, “What’s in it for me?”
People will not sign up for a call just because it’s free. They need a compelling reason to sign up for it. They want to know they are getting value.
Give your strategy session a name, with benefits and dollar value.
You can have it on your home page, however, you also want it on a separate page, possibly under a menu heading of Coaching. For Example:
Claim Your complimentary “Visibility Breakthrough” session valued at $297.

6. Having an about me page that looks like a resume
I know it sounds crazy, but your about me page is not really about you. People go there to find out what you can do for them. Therefore, your about me page should be written in a way that weaves your expertise with the solution to their problems.
Do not begin with your credentials or even your name. Start with the word YOU, as it is a very powerful word that never gets tiring to the reader. It draws the reader into your conversation and gets them thinking about them – and that is a good thing!
The first three lines of my about me page begin with the word YOU. I then state I understand because I’ve been there too.
7. Inconsistent messaging
What’s your first thought when looking at the picture below?
It is confusing, right? Is it KFC or is it McDonald’s? A lot of people are ALL over the place with their messaging. When potential customers look at your website, read your articles and check you out on social media, they do not get a clear message of what you do. So, what do they do?
They leave because they do not trust you. This is why it is so important to be congruent in your messaging everywhere and anywhere that you might be seen and not make these mistakes.
