The other day as I drove to the DMV, I passed the social services office where I worked when I began my coaching business in 2009.
I felt trapped!
I LOVED helping people – but sadly most of the people I was being paid to help, did not want the help.
To top it off many of my co-workers (and superiors) were just darned right mean and nasty and I could not wait to leave my day job behind!
Working there was killing me inside. In order to stay sane and half-way peaceful, I would meditate five to six times a day. All breaks at work were spent meditating.
To say it drained my energy is an understatement. I dreamt of the day I could leave that place and run my business full-time.
Maybe you can relate.
It’s estimated that about 80% of people hate their jobs. This is a horrible way to have to spend your life and your time. What’s even sadder is that after spending so many hours at a job you hate, you probably don’t have enough time and energy to do the things you love.
I became a coach with the dream of being in complete control of my life – This could be why you started your business as well!
That year, I created a vision board. As I was eligible for early retirement, I completed the retirement form online, printed it out and put it on my vision board. I also took a picture of my vision board and made it my wallpaper on my work computer.
I would look at that vision board every day and dream of the time that I could turn in my retirement papers and say farewell to the county for good.
The date I initially put on that board was 12/31/2010. I missed my mark by very little, my retirement date is 6/18/2011. I have moved on to create a happy life and a successful business and you can too!
Paul Taubman was on my Biz Success In 15 podcast speaking about Websites that Attract and Engage, he shared his story about his fears and triumphs of leaving his day job to take his business full-time.
Here are 4 steps to leave your day job behind:
- DECIDE that you will have a successful business and leave your day job.
- ASK yourself what needs to happen for you to say goodbye 9 to 5. Interestingly, both Paul and I had an income goal along with a date goal. I met my income goal, and Paul was at about 50%, but decided if he could earn that much money part-time, that it would be easy to earn what he needed by working his business full-time.
- CREATE a plan of action and start working that plan! How many clients will you need? How will you obtain these clients? Who is supporting you on your journey? What skills do you need to learn?
- VISUALIZE yourself turning in your resignation form. How good does it feel? Also, visualize yourself taking the actions that lead to your success.
Paul and I both had coaches who helped guide us to success so that we were able to quit our day jobs. Trying to go it alone is a long and lonely road. Get support on your journey from someone that’s been there and done that.
There are many – many stories of successful entrepreneurs who got to say goodbye and leave their day job behind. When will you tell yours?
